PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE |
|
The Thread community enjoyed another incredibly active and dynamic quarter with community engagement events, new partnerships, new certification geographies, and new Thread adoption with components and products. |
|
|
Munich Events
Early in the quarter, we replicated the great success we had in Mountain View earlier this year and reprised the Thread + One IoT Stakeholders Summit and Thread Technology Workshop events in Munich. At both of these events, we found great dialog and engagement with over 100 of Europe's leading connected product business leaders, technologists, architects, engineers, developers, and their companies.
We were extremely pleased with the high-level of engagement and awareness with Thread across the audiences. This allowed the groups to focus the dialog less about basic Thread education and more about solving marketplace problems and creating compelling product solutions with Thread.
I would also like to thank everyone at NXP for hosting and supporting these great events and the Thread community at their facilities in Munich.
KNX Liaison
We commemorated the great synergy we realized at our Munich events and the excitement building around Thread beyond the home by announcing our partnership with the KNX Association through a formal liaison agreement.
We look forward to collaborating with KNX, in conjunction with our existing and related relationship with the Fairhair Alliance, on how to make the pervasive and respected KNX application layer a great and natural fit for Thread networks addressing use cases in not only homes but also in commercial buildings across Europe and Asia.
Lab Expansion
We have answered growing global demand for resources and services in the geographies in which our members operate by authorizing test lab growth - both through expansion and new presence - to serve the US, the UK, Germany, and Taiwan markets.
Our original ATL partner, UL, is expanding their footprint with Thread capabilities in their Taiwan lab, complementing their existing locations in the US and UK. In addition, we are proud to newly designate both TUV Rheinland and 7layers, a Bureau Veritas Group company, as authorized testing labs to serve our members in US, Europe, and Asia.
Adoption
With a strong clip established with our existing six certified Thread components and the announced eero 2nd generation Thread-based products, Thread adoption got some more wind in its sails the past couple of months. Two new Thread-certified components are now available with silicon solutions from Nordic and Qorvo. In addition, Nest made available for purchase three Thread-based products in its Nest Secure security product family.
Meanwhile, we continue to be eager to hear about new Thread adoption - certified or not. If you are using Thread in the marketplace or know of an organization that is, let us know.
Lisbon Member Meeting
We held our 9th Thread Member Meeting in Lisbon closing out 2017. The format changed to allow more time for working sessions. Key topics discussed throughout the 3-day meeting included our 2018 marketing strategy and promotional plans for residential and commercial markets as well as progress on the 1.2 spec and Commercial Extensions. Thread devices and products were on display from members including Nest, Centero, NXP, Texas Instruments, Silicon Labs, Nordic Semiconductor, and Kirale.
Thread's next Member Meeting will be held February 27 - March 1 in Boston. Contact Krista Ingram for more information.
Best Regards,
Grant Erickson,
President, Thread Group |

HOT TOPICS |
|
Thread Ready |
The Thread Ready program was released to members on October 5th and gives members an option for formal recognition Thread technology implementations that don't fit a Thread certified product adoption.
|
|
|
The reason to offer this program is to support the adoption of Thread while also ensuring that the core requirements of Thread are met. It is important to note that this recognition requires a formal review and approval process followed by product testing at one of the Thread test labs and is a time-bound recognition. A powerpoint document with details is available on the Thread Member Portal landing page under the Certification section.

|
Thread Website |
We continue to enhance the website as Thread evolves and gains market traction. Recently, we updated the site to focus on our target audiences: Home, Building and Developers. The "Developer" page has been re-designed towards the embedded developer and provides information on how to use and get started with Thread. We have even more ideas of what to add to this page so there will be additional updates coming!
One topic that we'd love to add is what Thread member companies are actually doing with Thread. It could be a real product in the market or a concept of how to use Thread. If you are willing to share what you're doing with Thread, please contact Sujata Neidig.

CES 2018 |
Thread Group will be participating at Pepcom which is a press and analyst event held at The Mirage hotel the night before CES starts. We will also be represented in the Zigbee Alliance meeting room with Dotdot over Thread demos. To help promote Thread members at CES, we are creating a Thread Member CES brochure that lists all of our members who have booths at CES. In addition, we have "Thread Member" placards that members can use in their booths, contact Krista Ingram if you would like a Member placard. Lastly, we will send out an email blast before CES with all the details and suggestions of how to share Thread news and activities on social media for our Members to help promote.
