PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE |
|
The second quarter was another busy and productive one as we continued our emphasis on bringing Thread certified products to market! Highlights include our face-to-face member meeting in Vancouver where a key highlight was an incredibly compelling and highly successful demonstration of multiple devices, running multiple application layers, with Internet / cloud connectivity, provided by eero 2nd generation access points, all on a singular Thread network with high performance and low latency. Participants also had an inside look into the latest specification developments. |
|
|
As we strive to extend Thread beyond the home, we entered a partnership with CABA to help advance IoT Interoperability.
We also hosted two webinars this quarter:
Coming Up
We are gearing up for the next Thread Group Technology Workshop on September 14th in Munich, Germany. Hosted by NXP, this workshop aims to duplicate the success of the US event by providing an ideal opportunity for attendees to gain industry and competitive insight on the Thread Group and the latest trends in the IoT market throughout Europe.
Best Regards,
Grant Erickson,
President, Thread Group |

HOT TOPICS |

Thread Group Messaging Regarding Bluetooth Mesh |
The recent Bluetooth Mesh announcement validates the need for mesh networking in IoT deployments. Bluetooth Mesh is a new technology just entering the market that leverages the Bluetooth SIG's existing networking protocol which was designed for point-to-point device-to-device applications such as audio and wearables.
|
|
|
Although Bluetooth hardware is pervasive, Bluetooth Mesh is a completely new application programming paradigm which requires IoT developers to invest time and money in the integration or creation of their applications with an entirely new type of network. Thread, on the other hand, is designed as an Internet Protocol mesh network from the start. Therefore, programming for Thread is similar to programming for other universally adopted Internet Protocol networks. Simply put, Thread is a low power mesh network designed specifically for the INTERNET of things.
Additionally, Thread offers a convergence layer across all networks, which gives product management and development teams flexibility and several competitive advantages, including significantly decreasing costs, complexity, and time to market. For example, developers can either deploy existing applications or develop new ones using proven, time-tested paradigms. They can adopt Thread now, and because it's adaptable and flexible, they can run one or more concurrent, heterogeneous application layers on the same network, as well as add or change app layers and ecosystems later. In addition, IP connectivity delivers secure, direct, end-to-end, device-to-cloud integration without intervening translators, gateways, or proxies.
Overall, Thread provides tremendous value as an IP-based networking protocol that can quickly be deployed today in IoT products: many devices, many applications, many use-cases, and many app layers to provide one network with no hubs.

What are the Thread Commercial Extensions? |
Thread Group hosted "Connectivity Beyond the Home" webinar on June 20 to discuss why Thread is the natural choice for wireless connectivity in commercial applications such as building automation, energy management and lighting control.
Key topics covered in this webinar:
- Why Thread was created
- Benefits Thread brings to the commercial sector
- Key capabilities for the commercial implementation of Thread
- Thread Commercial Extensions: New capabilities
- Examples why companies selected Thread for the B2B market
|
|
Thread is now primed for market adoption |
The Thread certification program and fast-ramp tools have been released with multiple certified stacks/silicon available, with marketing efforts focused on Thread adoption. The webinar "Learn How Thread Delivers Value to You and Your Customers" was delivered on May 9 and addressed how Thread fits with other wireless connectivity technologies; why Thread was created; what benefits Thread brings to developing IoT solutions; and how to get started developing Thread-based solutions now. Look for more targeted messaging and content over the coming months to focus on specific markets (consumer, commercial) and specific target audiences (product managers, product developers). |

Thread in the market |
On Tuesday, June 13, eero announced their 2nd-generation products, which now include support for Thread. The announcement marks the launch of the world's first open, generic, Thread-to-WiFi and Thread-to-Ethernet border routers, which opens up Thread products and the Internet to one another.
