Why do we need another type of wireless network? Aren't there too many already? Today, no wireless network combines these essential features: IP based mesh network, open protocol that carries IPv6 natively, robust mesh with no single point of failure and "no administration required", simple for consumers to use in residential situations, secure, power-efficient, runs over standard 802.15.4 radios, and designed to support a wide variety of products for the home like appliances, access control, climate control, energy management, lighting, safety and security. Thread Group has recently signed an agreement and entered into a partnership to work together with the ZigBee Alliance to develop a joint solution that combines ZigBee's Cluster Library (ZCL) application protocol with the upcoming Thread networking protocol! ZigBee's ZCL at the Application Layer and Thread at the Networking Layer, all running over standard 802.15.4 hardware. We're very excited about working with ZigBee on this effort and see it as the first of many meaningful partnerships between Thread Group and other alliances addressing the connected home. Please see here for a copy of the press release: http://www.threadgroup.org/NewsEvents.aspx

The Innovation Enabler Program is well underway and the Q1 2015 winner will be announced soon. This program is designed to give new companies with innovative ideas an opportunity for a free Thread Contributor membership with one company selected per quarter. We are now taking submissions for Q2. If you would like to submit an application, please visit http://www.threadgroup.org/innovationprogram.

Cheers,
Chris Boross,
President Thread Group

Why do we need another type of wireless network? Aren't there too many already? 802.15.4 mesh networks with 6LoWPAN have been around for a while. What's new with Thread? 6LoWPAN is IPv6 networking for "constrained" networks like 802.15.4 - including Thread. A practical home network needs more than IPv6, it needs: security, easy commissioning/onboarding, robust mesh routing optimized for home use, no single point of failure, plug-and-play - no user "network engineering" required and support for low power (sleepy) devices

What are the Thread application level interface(s)? Thread is a network specification, think of it as "Wi-Fi for devices". Application standards can span multiple networks and Thread can support multiple application standards.

How is Thread different from AllJoyn, OIC, IIC, IPSO and other application-level standards? It's Thread's job to securely deliver packets. Application level standards define the content of those packets. Your Wi-Fi network supports many different protocols and application standards and so does Thread.
